Breath health for children
should become a part of a person's daily routine. This practice
should start for children when they are born. You should begin
by wiping your baby's gums with a damp towel. Bacteria grows in
the mouth even at this age.
When your child's teeth begin to show, you
should start brushing them. There are toothbrushes made
specifically for babies. As your child gets older and their
teeth get closer together, you should floss between each
tooth.
It has been recommended by the American Dental
Association that a child have its first visit to the dentist at
the age of one year. The dentist can take a look at the child's
teeth and mouth to see if there are any problems.
There are pediatric dentists specializing in
children's dental care. However, you can take your child with
you when you visit the dentist. The dentist can informally look
at your child's teeth. This makes the child more comfortable,
no pain involved, when their regular visits begin.
As your child gets older, teach them how to
brush their teeth, one tooth at a time. Encourage and
praise the child for a job well-done. You should supervise
your child's brushing until they are about seven years
old. At this age they can start to brush their teeth on
their own, but you should check to see how they are
doing.
Children generally will have problems with bad
breath after eating certain foods such as a hamburger with
onions. This condition is temporary. However, if your child is
at school or with friends away from home, they may be teased.
Explaining the effect of these foods on the breath will make
the child more comfortable if they offered a mint or a piece of
gum.
There are medical conditions that can cause bad
breath in children, such as sinus infection. Once the infection
is cleared, the odor goes away.
If you start practicing breath health with your
child, it will become a regular part of their daily routine. It
will also help to prevent problems later on.
